Unicorn Tonic

COLOR-CHANGING VODKA TONIC

A classic vodka tonic is one part vodka and two to four parts tonic water. Where a gin and tonic takes advantage of gin’s natural juniper flavor to combat the bitter tonic water, a traditional vodka tonic is more bare.

Our color-changing vodka, however, reintroduces a subtle botanical to your favorite tonic cocktail, with an added bonus: an all-natural color-changing experience. For the best effect, use a collins glass rather than a shorter rocks glass.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 to 2 oz Unicorn Butterfly Pea Vodka
  • 3 to 5 oz tonic water
  • Fresh lime (or lemon)
  • Ice

Instructions

Fill a Collins glass with ice. Pour our blue vodka over ice first. Follow with tonic water and gently stir. Squeeze lemon or lime over the top and garnish with a citrus wedge or wheel.

Color-Changing Vodka Tonic

Unicorn Vodka is infused with butterfly pea flower tea, which is sensitive to pH levels. The initial shot of Unicorn Distillery’s vodka will pour a bold blue over a full glass of ice, and the addition of tonic water will cause it to transform into a subtle pink.

Unicorn Tonic

History of the Vodka Tonic

The gin and tonic, the predecessor to the vodka tonic, was “invented” in the 1800s, by British soldiers in India, trying to make their anti-malaria medications (taken with tonic water) less bitter. There’s no serendipitous story or elusive mystery to the invention of the vodka tonic. Like most vodka variations of gin cocktails, it probably gained popularity as vodka became more fashionable in the ‘80s and ‘90s.

Today, there are a handful of popular variations on the classic vodka tonic, but none as memorable as the Unicorn Vodka Tonic.
