Cosmopolitan
The Perfect Cosmopolitan
The cosmopolitan is a refreshing cocktail that balances tart and sweet fruit notes for fresh, bright flavor ingredients. That said, there is room for subtle variances in a cosmo—some prefer to up the sweetness, others like more sour.
Ingredients:
- Citrus vodka, 1½ oz
- Orange liqueur, ½ oz
- Lime juice, ½ oz
- Cranberry juice, 1 oz
- Ice
- Lime garnish
Instructions:
Add ingredients (except lime garnish) to a cocktail shaker. Shake until cold. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with lime.
You can use plain vodka in a pinch (or if you prefer). Your cosmo will be a little less sweet.

The invention of the Cosmopolitan
The invention of the cosmo is disputed.
A recipe similar to the modern cosmopolitan was published in 1934. It calls for gin and raspberry juice, however, and is not widely recognized as a cosmopolitan.
A bartender from Minneapolis, Neal Murray, claims to have invented the cocktail in 1975 by adding cranberry juice to a Kamikaze cocktail. Cheryl Cook has also been credited with inventing the drink, in Florida, in the mid-1980s. Many nod to these early inspirations, but credit Toby Cecchini, in Manhattan, circa 1987 with the formal invention.
