The invention of the tequila sunrise
What are the odds someone made this layered cocktail by accident? We believe Gene Sulit knew what he was doing when he first crafted it at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel in the 1930s. The first tequila sunrise recipe used creme de cassis (blackcurrant liqueur), lime juice and soda water. Folks have mixed up different renditions throughout the years, with the recipe including grenadine (pomegranate syrup) and orange juice rising to the top.
